Tipping Point is one of the most popular quizzes on TV. Hosted by Ben Shephard, it’s usually on air between 4pm and 5pm on weekdays on ITV1.
The show usually starts two hours of fun for quiz fans, with four players pitting their wits against general knowledge questions and the Tipping Point machine, before Bradley Walsh’s daily game of The Chase at 5pm.
There’s not always a Tipping Point competition to get involved with, but when they appear, there’s a large cash prize on offer for the winner.
They’ll usually be in the form of a single week competition giving away between £10,000 and £20,000, or a two week edition rising as high at £40,000 for the winner.

Throughout the show, a game is played by winning the chance to put counters into the Tipping Point machine, which resembles the ones you’ll find in seaside arcades full of 2p coins. In this one though, each counter that passes over the tipping point and falls into the tray at the bottom of the machine is worth a huge £50. Each time a player gets to insert a counter, they can choose from four drop zones, which represent quarters of the machine from left to right.
The game starts with four players, initially with a round where they can buzz in to answer a question. Each player can buzz in three times, and if they answer correctly can put a counter into the machine. If they’re wrong, the counter goes into the penalty pot instead, with a bonus question at the end of the round for the correct answer to win the penalty pot counters.
At the end of the round, the player with the least money is eliminated, leaving three players for round two.
In the second round, the players each get forty five seconds to answer as many questions correctly as possible. Each correct answer will get them a counter to put in the machine once the time is up. Once all three players have had their go, the player with the lowest winnings is out, leaving two in the game.
For the third round, both players are asked three questions alternately, with a correct answer getting them a counter to put into the machine. They can choose to answer the question themselves or pass it to their opponent to answer. If the player answers the question incorrectly, the counter is awarded to their opponent.
The player ending the third round with the highest money banked wins and goes on to the final round, with the other player knocked out of the running.
In the final round, the finalist puts the larger jackpot counter into the machine, with the objective of winning £10,000 if it goes all the way down and out the bottom (called over the tipping point) before the end of the round.
The player gets six categories to answer a question, with a choice of easy, medium or hard for each. They’ll receive 1,2 or 3 counters respectively to put into the machine for answering the question correctly.
If the jackpot counter falls into the tray at the bottom of the machine before they use up all the counters they win from their questions, the game is over and the player wins £10,000.
If not, Ben Shephard offers them a chance to win the jackpot with three further counters to put into the machine, but they’ll lose the money built up so far. Their choice boils down to taking the money in the bank, or gambling it to get the jackpot counter out within three more counters dropping in. A failed gamble means leaving with nothing.
Tipping Point Competition Prizes
The prizes for viewers are almost always cash amounts, and rarely less than £10,000. That means the winning viewer can win more than the contestant on the show, with the exception of the celebrity version where the prizes are doubled and the contestants playing on a series where dropping the jackpot counter and the double counter (marked x2) together wins £20,000.
Typically the prize will be in the range of £14,000 to £20,000 in cash, but occasionally ITV run a prize draw over multiple weeks, meaning that you might see a prize in up to £40,000 for a two week competition.
