Whenever you see a competition mentioned on social media, there’s a good chance that you’ll see a keyboard warrior categorically declare that it’s fixed or some other dark forces are at play.
Spin To Win is the daily free entry competition run by ITV on this morning where a lucky winner can get their hands on a cash prize worth up to £3,000. You can read more about how to play here.
Normally, we’re quick to debunk accusations of competitions being fixed – the past controversies surrounding ITV competitions are well documented in the media and we’ve briefly talked about them here too – there is simply too much at stake now for any deliberate underhand tactics for big brand companies when it comes to operating competitions.
Spin To Win though does have an occasional tendency to be influenced though, but not in the way that you might read about in claims on the internet. In fact, ITV are quite open about it on their website…
“Taking into account the personal circumstances of the entrant, the presenter may allow the wheel or tombola to be spun again at their discretion.”
This Morning Spin To Win FAQ, ITV.com
On occasion, it looks remarkably like the wheel stops more quickly than usual or seems to spin a little longer to stop on the jackpot amount. That’s usually coinciding with the caller talking about a tough circumstance in their life or saving for a life changing purchase, such as one caller who said they’d buy a new prosthetic limb with their win.
In other words, if a presenter affects where the spin stops, it’s almost certainly going to be to increase the prize for a viewer that’s deserving of a little extra luck.
As it’s a free entry competition that’s hard to say is unreasonable, although it could potentially mean that the top prize is lower for the remainder of the week if ITV choose to invoke the clause in the terms and conditions to allow them to do so.
