If anyone mentions 22 red boxes, or The Banker, you’ll struggle to find more than a handful of people that don’t remember Deal Or No Deal on Channel 4.
In fact, most people still think of Noel Edmonds, such was the popularity of the original run of 11 series running between 2005 and 2016.
In TV circles, DOND was something of a perfect case study, consistently pulling massive audiences show after show. Of course, it dwindled over time, eventually ending to rest the format after eleven incredible years just before Christmas in 2016.
Seven years later it’s back, with a few changes – most notably with Stephen Mulhern on hosting duties.
Possibly giving him his first massive hit show outside of his role of Ant and Dec’s jester on Saturday Night Takeaway (Stephen! Stephen! Stephen!), ITV are betting on him to revive the Deal Or No Deal format with a few modifications (see below).

What’s Changed In The Deal Or No Deal Reboot?
The show remains broadly the same, but does have a few key changes.
The Host
As we mentioned, the host has changed in ITV’s updated show. Stephen Mulhern takes over from Noel Edmunds from series 12.
The Prizes
The jackpot is now £100,000, down from £250,000. While that box is a huge drop, it’s still enough money to make a huge change to most people’s lives.
As the top box is now a hundred thousand pounds instead of a quarter of a million, that means the remaining boxes have had to be re-jigged slightly too. It used to be that the second largest sum was the hundred thousand, so the re-assigned values are:
Blue Boxes | Red Boxes |
---|---|
1p | £1,000 |
10p | £2,000 |
50p | £3,000 |
£1 | £4,000 |
£5 | £5,000 |
£10 | £7,500 |
£50 | £10,000 |
£100 | £25,000 |
£250 | £50,000 |
£500 | £75,000 |
£750 | £100,000 |
One positive that’s come out of the new values is that losing the jackpot box in the game is less impactful for the player – in the original version the top box was two-and-a-half times larger than the second box (£250,000 vs £100,000), whereas now it’s only a third larger (£100,000 vs £75,000).
As a result, taking out the biggest box could mean a smaller crash between banker’s offers.
How Long Is Deal Or No Deal Back For?
the 2023 series of Deal Or No Deal is thought to have been commissioned initially for 20 episodes, however the investment in a new set and promoting it heavily throughout the ITV schedules suggests that ITV are expecting it to have longevity.
Time will tell whether the revival of DOND will become an afternoon staple in the usual Tipping Point slot.
With ITV’s search for new permanent hosts for This Morning now over, and Ben Shephard’s getting the job, it may be that he’s got limited availability for further Tipping Point episodes to be filmed, paving the way for Deal Or No Deal to take over the weekday afternoon slot as 4pm on a more permanent basis.
